Opt-in Freebie Ideas for Bloggers

Are you struggling to come up with freebie ideas for your blog?

I’ve been there.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a blogger is waiting to start an email list.

And the best way to grow your email list is to offer your readers a free resource.

However, it’s sometimes challenging to brainstorm the best opt-in freebie.

Not to worry.

No matter your blog niche, you can create an opt-in freebie to attract your target audience and drive traffic to your blog.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss all things freebies, from the different types of freebies and how to create them to some of the best opt-in freebie ideas and ways to promote them.

What is an Opt-in Freebie?

An opt-in freebie or lead magnet is a resource you give your audience in exchange for their email address. Your audience gets exclusive content to help them solve a problem, and you boost your blogging traffic and build your email list.

It’s a win-win.

The free offer can be in any form, including content upgrades, resource libraries, and challenges.

The bottom line is that an opt-in freebie will help you build a relationship with your audience, drive traffic to your blog, and make money.

Types of Freebies to Offer on Blog

  • Resource list
  • Content upgrade
  • Facebook group
  • Free resource library
  • Graphics
  • E-books
  • Audio downloads
  • Stock photos
  • Printables
  • Challenges
  • Webinar
  • Swipe files
  • Email course
  • Worksheet and Workbooks
  • Planners
  • Cheat sheets
  • Guide
  • Templates
  • Quiz
  • Discount (coupon code or free trial)

We all know the key to growing a blog is to create valuable content for our audience. Well, the same applies to the free resources we offer. If an opt-in freebie is not good enough to engage your audience, you will not grow your email list or blog.

Did you know that bloggers who make more than $50,000 per year use 343% more email-collection methods than lower-earning bloggers?

It’s safe to say that opt-in freebies work.

What Makes a Good Freebie?

Relate to Your Audience

Your free opt-in offer should be relevant to your audience and the content you share on your blog. The goal is to make sure your freebie is reaching the right people.

For example, offering a budgeting template on your food blog may not resonate with your audience.

However, a meal planner or recipe book may be more effective in attracting new subscribers.

To understand your audience, you can perform market research, ask questions in your blog posts and newsletters, join relevant forums or groups, or use Google Analytics to view your audience’s interests and needs.

When you’re brainstorming freebie ideas, think about ways to solve a specific problem for your audience or make their lives easier.

Add Value with Your Freebie

Your lead magnet or content upgrade should be valuable to your audience. Although your freebie may apply to your blogging niche, it may not work for your audience.

Understanding your audience and their needs is the key to creating a successful opt-in freebie that they can put to good use.

And trust me—if you’re not giving your audience what they need, it’s hard to grow your email list and business.

Nothing will have a reader unsubscribe faster than receiving a lackluster freebie.

The bottom line is that you should deliver what you promised. And if possible, aim to over-deliver on your freebie.

If your audience receives value from your freebie, they’ll likely remain loyal subscribers and potential customers.

Make Your Freebie Easily Consumable

Ensure your freebie is easily accessible and digestible for your audience.

If your readers have trouble finding your freebie, you may miss out on the chance to get new subscribers.

Also, your freebie should be easily digestible. Your subscribers will never use a resource that overwhelms them. For instance, a 100-page e-book may be too long for your readers to consume, but a 10-page e-book may be just what they need.

Likewise, if your reader has to go through hoops to get their free offer, they may abandon the process altogether.

Make Your Freebie Attractive

Finally, you want to make sure your opt-in freebie is visually appealing.

An unattractive opt-in form or freebie may turn readers away.

The goal is to draw attention to your opt-in, so use bright colors, design elements, and quality photos to make your freebie stand out.

How to Create Blog Freebies

Choose a Format for Your Freebie

When you’re creating a blog freebie, one of the most crucial steps is choosing the format.

Should your resource be a PDF download, email series, spreadsheet, audio recording, or another format?

No matter the format, your freebie should be easy to use and provide enough valuable information that readers will find helpful in their everyday lives.

For example, if you’re offering a 7-day challenge, consider an email series that delivers each day’s challenge to your readers.

However, a simple checklist is more effective as a PDF download.

You can also perform A/B testing to see which format works best for your audience. For instance, test the same freebie, one version as a PDF and the other as a spreadsheet, and see which format receives more engagement.

Choose a Design Software

Once you’ve brainstormed opt-in ideas and chosen your freebie, it’s time to design them. You can use design tools like Photoshop or Canva to create your resource.

I’ve used various design tools, but Canva is my jam.

Photoshop is perfect for complicated designs, but Canva’s user-friendly interface, elements, and templates make the design process a breeze.

You can design tons of freebies with Canva, such as checklists, worksheets, e-books, planners, and slideshows.

And a bonus: Canva offers a free version. So, you can create your freebie without breaking your wallet.

Use Templates

You already have a ton of tasks to complete for your blog, so you don’t have a ton of time to create freebies.

That’s where templates come in handy.

The best way to save time and ease your workload when creating freebies is to use templates. Templates provide a framework for your opt-in, allowing you to design the perfect freebie without starting from scratch.

You can find free templates on Canva or purchase them on other design websites such as Creative Market, Design Cuts, or Etsy.

Also, you can join membership sites like Ivory Mix or Styled Stock Society for a one-shop-gold-mine of resources.

Design Your Opt-in Forms and Promotional Graphics

Another important factor to consider is your opt-in forms and graphics.

Opt-in forms are the gateway that allows your readers to access and download your freebie and can be a pop-up, slider, landing page, or embedded form on your website.

When creating an opt-in form, you want to make it attractive, simple to use, easy to find, and clearly outline what your readers get.

The same goes for your promotional graphics.

You want to create eye-catching mockups, like book covers, stationery, and computer screens, to draw attention to your freebie and give your subscriber an idea of what to expect.

For example, you can use a clipboard mockup image to display your checklist freebie or a laptop image to show off your workbook.

You can create your opt-in forms directly in your email service provider and embed them on your own website or use a form builder like Thrive Leads, ConvertBox, or OptinMonster to create customized forms.

Test Your Opt-in Freebie

Testing your freebie will help ensure everything works as intended and allow you to make any necessary tweaks before releasing it.

Test the opt-in forms, check the download links, and proofread for typos.

Before I publish a freebie, I love to simulate an email sign-up, which involves signing up as a subscriber and going through the entire opt-in process to ensure everything work as it should.

Taking the time to test your opt-in freebie can save you a lot of headaches and give your readers an enjoyable experience.

Deliver Freebie to Your Subscribers

Choose Your Delivery Method

Last but not least, once you’ve created your opt-in forms and designed your freebie, it’s time to deliver it to your audience.

You can upload your freebie to an email marketing service provider, like MailerLite, ConvertKit, or Flodesk, to send it to your subscriber automatically.

I use Flodesk here and MailerLite for my other website. And both platforms make it easy to send emails, create automated sequences, and track engagement.

You can also upload your file to Dropbox or Google Drive and include the download link in your email.

Create a Welcome Sequence

You can also create a welcome sequence for your freebie. A welcome sequence is a series of emails you send to your subscriber at specified intervals after they sign up for a resource on your website.

Welcome sequences are great because you can set them up on autopilot. Once you build them, they’ll run automatically.

There are so many ways to set up your welcome sequence. You can write a few emails with helpful tips, then send them to your new subscribers and end it there.

However, creating a multi-message sequence to lead readers down a sales funnel is even more effective.

Take your subscribers on a journey, giving them valuable information at each step while gently guiding them toward your paid products or services.

Promote Your Freebie

After you’ve created your amazing opt-in freebie and promotional images, the last step is to get the word out about your freebie.

Promoting your freebie is a great way to attract new readers to your blog.

Promote Freebies on Your Website

  • Web Pages

Add your opt-in forms to your About, Home, and other web pages as a call to action to guide your reader to the next step.

  • Resource Page

If you have various freebies, you can create a password-protected resource page that’s only accessible to subscribers.

  • Blog Posts

Promote your freebies within or at the end of your blog posts. You can also write content related to your free offer, giving you another avenue to promote your freebie.

Bonus tip: an inline form works best in blog posts

  • Sidebar

Add your opt-in freebie form to your sidebars.

  • Navigation Menu

Another great place to promote your opt-in freebie is by linking it to your navigation menu.

  • Footer and Header

Place your opt-ins in the header and footer of your website.

  • Pop-up Form (entry or exit)

Another way to promote your opt-in freebie is through pop-up forms.

Have your opt-in form pop up a few seconds after a user enters your website, or set it to appear when the user is about to leave your site.

Promote Freebies on Social Media

  • Pinterest Bio

Add a link to your opt-in freebie to your Pinterest bio.

  • Pinterest Pins

Create mockups and pins of your opt-in freebie and promote them on Pinterest.

  • Instagram Bio

Instagram gives you the option to add one link to your bio. Add a link for your lead magnet to promote it further. You can also create a landing page with multiple links and share that link instead.

  • Instagram Feed

Promote your freebie on your Instagram feed. A great way to do this is to add it to your Instagram marketing strategy and sprinkle your freebie within your other Instagram posts.

  • Instagram Stories

Use Instagram stories to promote your freebie.

  • Twitter Bio

Link your freebie at the end of your Twitter bio.

  • Facebook Page Header

Create a mockup of your freebie and add it to your Facebook page header.

  • YouTube

Mention your freebie in your YouTube videos and add the link to your video descriptions.

Other Ways to Promote Opt-in Freebies

  • Create a Landing Page with Multiple Links

Create a landing page with all the links to your opt-in freebie on different platforms, then use the link for social media promotion.

  • Give to Existing Subscribers

Sharing your freebie with your email list will give your existing subscribers a sense of excitement to test out a new resource, which helps boost engagement.

  • Email Signature

Link your freebie in your email signature. You can also provide a shareable link to your current subscribers and ask them to share on social media.

  • Guest Post Bio

Include a link for your opt-in freebie in your guest post bio. This way, readers who like your content will be more likely to download your lead magnet.

  • The Comment Section on Other Blogs

You can use the comment sections of other blog posts to promote your opt-in freebie. When leaving comments, include a link to your freebie.

  • Create a Curated Thank You Page

Instead of sending a generic thank-you message after someone subscribes to your email list, send them a curated thank-you page and include links to your opt-in offer that they can share on social media.
